FLAVOUR: dry, warm, full-bodied, harmonious, delicate
and austere at the same time, persistent.
James Suckling 93 points - The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a terrific wine for the year. Sweet red cherry, plum, tobacco, mint, sweet spices and orange peel are all front and center. This is a gorgeous 2011 Brunello that represents everything the vintage can be; open-knit, accessible and polished. I don’t expect the 2011 will be a long-term ager, but it is exceptionally beautiful and delicious today.
Enticing, delicate scents of iris, rose petal, pressed powder and woodland berry mingle together in the glass. The elegant, restrained palate offers ripe wild cherry, crushed strawberry, orange peel, cinnamon anise and white pepper alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink 2017-2022.
A ripe, juicy wine with blueberry, chocolate, walnut and cherry character. Round and savory. Silky tannins. Very close quality to the fabuous 2010. Delicious now.
Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini’s 2011 Brunello di Montalcino shows a different aromatic profile with eucalyptus leaf, rosemary sprig and forest fruit. The wine does not show the soft and plush cherry ripeness that is so characteristic of the warm 2011 vintage. Instead, this wine shows more bramble and green herb than I have tasted in most of the other newly released Brunellos. The mouthfeel is thin and lean with moderate persistence. The finish is slightly sharp and thorny. This wine needs a year or two to relax.
